  7. Black Chancery is a calligraphic Type 1 PostScript font based on the
  8. public domain bitmap font of the same name. It's a good looking and
  9. useful display font, lending itself well to many occasions.

  11. Black Chancery began as a modification of Bill Horton's lovely
  12. FancyChancery 24 point bitmap, which had random dots missing from
  13. within the letters to give the effect of snow falling in front of
  14. them. (Rather like his Palazzo Grey font, part of Casady's Fluent
  15. Fonts). Doug Miles filled in the dots, did some restyling, made five
  16. additional large point sizes, and gave it a new name.

  18. Earl Allen of Altsys Corp. used Fontographer 3.2 to autotrace the
  19. BlackChancery bitmaps to make PostScript Type 1 outlines, cleaned
  20. them up, adjusted character spacing and added kerning pairs. Doug
  21. Miles further cleaned-up the outlines, removing unneeded control
  22. points, adjusted the height and baseline positions of most
  23. characters, resized some of them, added accented letters and other
  24. option characters. He converted the numbers to "old style" figures,
  25. probably more appropriate for this font.

  27. (Note that Bill Horton has made his own public domain PostScript
  28. version of BlackChancery, considerably restyled and called
  29. MacHumaine. It's more angular looking, more faithful to actual
  30. hand-done broad-pen calligraphy.)

  32. There is an optional lowercase j available by pressing Option-j, if
  33. you prefer a different style. There are now ligatures of ct and st at
  34. Option-comma and Option-period, and of course the ligatures of fi and
  35. fl are in their standard locations at Option-5 and Option-6.

  37. Included are the PostScript (sometimes known as the "printer font")
  38. file, the bitmap font file (installed with Font/DA Mover), the AFM
  39. file (which you can usually throw away), and the Fontographer
  40. database. You can use the Fontographer database to make custom
  41. modifications to the font if you own Fontographer.

  43. Works with any Type 1-capable PostScript printer or Adobe Type
  44. Manager. DOES NOT work with Freedom of Press 3.0.

  46. BlackChancery is great for headlines, letterheads, greeting cards.
  47. Wherever used, it adds an old-world elegance to your printed page.
